Recently, a new project has been awarded on water accounting in the Segura River Basin, Spain to a consortium that includes FutureWater. The ASSET (Accounting System for the Segura river and Transfer) project is funded by the European Commission under the Preparatory Action on development of prevention activities to halt desertification in Europe supported by the Environment Directorate-General of the EC. The Universidad Politécnica de Cartagena, Spain, coordinates de project, and the River Basin Authority is the principal partner.

The task of FutureWater within the project will be to develop and implement the System of Environmental and Economic Accounting for Water (SEEAW) in the Segura River Basin adopting the standards given by the Water Framework Directive and supporting the Water Scarcity and Drought (WS&D) policy. The data collection and standardization in the Segura River Basin and the integration of these balances into the River Basin Management Plan should provide guidance and decision support in order to decrease the vulnerability of the basin against droughts and climate change.
