Analysis of Effects of Adjustable Weirs: Opportunities to Retain and Store Water

With this pilot project Waterboard Zuiderzeeland implements the principles of the Dutch policy "WB21" (Water Policy 21st Century): first retain, second store, and finally discharge of water.

The project concluded that

  • adjustable weirs can reduce and delay peak discharges without agicultural crop growth reduction due to increased soil moisture content upstream of the weirs;
  • adjustable weirs offer an excellent opportunity to store water in the soil as well as in the surface water.
